why ARE BUTTERFLY GARDENS important?
The importance of butterfly gardens.
Each year, Eastern monarch butterflies travel 3,000 miles from the northeastern US to their winter habitats in California and Mexico. The number of butterflies making this journey has been decreasing at an alarming rate. The effects of climate change and the destruction of habitat are threatening monarchs.
Milkweed is the monarch butterflies lifeline. It is both the home for their laying eggs and their source of food and nutrients. The decline in milkweed signifies a significant loss of habitat for monarchs.
Monarch butterflies are an essential part of a thriving ecosystem. They seek nectar-rich plants, and this process allows them to transfer pollen between plants and encourages their own reproduction. Monarchs, and other pollinators, are part of the food web, and their existence reflects a decline in other pollinators, which would, in turn, hurt human food systems. This is why it is so important that we find ways to help pollinator populations thrive.
Our butterfly garden class will teach you this and much more.
WHO IS THIS EXPERIENCE FOR?
We believe the key to a successful retreat is fun and engagement. Learning about butterfly migration and the monarch butterfly crisis can be the perfect segue into a team-building activity of butterfly garden building.
