Virtual trivia game to play on zoom
Online trivia games are some of our favorite crowd-pleaser team building activities for remote teams to play over zoom. They can help build workplace relationships, promote employee engagement and be a helpful way to disconnect from the busy work schedule.
Working towards a common goal (even if it winning a quiz) can help create an environment where employees feel like they are part of the community and are getting to know their team members. It is a simple team building exercise that is bound to boost employee satisfaction and levels of employee engagement.
Virtual trivia requires little preparation as no kits or equipment needs to be delivered and it is low maintenance in terms of effort and participation. You can choose a platform to maximize the employee experience β this may be Zoom, House Party, or Google Hangouts and invite your team along.
How to choose a Trivia platform
The best option may be to create your own quiz. Sites like Quizmaker allow you to customize every aspect of your quiz, your quiz title, and questions, how it is marked such as a score or poll, settings such as randomized order, a quiz timer or a progress bar, and even ideas for results such as a certificate, a leader board or even a thank you message at the end of the quiz.
You can choose a Quiz Maker website such as QuizWitz where you can avail of their free version for up to seven people and take advantage of their template quizzes with topics such as Disney, Foodie, RomComs, or even Pride. Less work for you and just as effective.
Kahoot! is highly efficient as it can connect to your chosen streaming platform such as Zoom, Google Hangouts, or MS Teams. Their business model Kahoot! 360 allows for streaming presentations, delivering training, allowing for brainstorming and collaboration, and of course β hosts games and quizzes to help your team connect.
Why your strategy matters
The organization and setup of your trivia game can make or break it. If your goal is to help your team connect, you want your trivia game to be as seamless and simple as possible. Simple instructions and simple questions allow more room for the fun stuff.
We recommend dividing and conquering β limit your participants to a maximum of 15 and have two hosts to guide you through the game. The actual host can be the one to ask the questions and eventually announce the winner while the game master can oversee break-out rooms, announce time warnings and explain the rules of the game.
Pro Tip: To add to the atmosphere, you can queue your favorite Spotify playlist in the background while you play, this can be done through sharing computer sound on Zoom or embedding the song into your slides or presentations.
Divide your colleagues into teams and encourage them to come up with their own team name, you can even have a prize for the best team name.
Set up break-out rooms for the teams to confer and converse, and once the host has asked (and repeated, or even typed into the chat for further clarification) the question, send them out to their breakout rooms.
You can set a time limit for how long they will be in the breakout rooms, and the game master can announce when the time is running out.
Each team can nominate a representative or even a team captain to share the answer on their behalf β this is especially important so that nobody is talked over, and everyone gets a chance to be heard.
This process of coming together and seeking solutions and success can help with attitudes towards problem-solving and can result in high-performing and happier colleagues.
The trivia questions
When it comes to categories, we must find the balance between too broad and too niche. Not everyone is a sports fanatic or a film aficionado, but everyone can attempt some general knowledge of pop culture trivia questions.
Regarding format, multiple-choice questions are our go-to for the early rounds and easier questions as you have a chance to guess correctly on accident. However, when it gets closer to the end you can introduce type answer/ questions to keep everyone on their toes. You can keep track of the accepted answers on a separate spreadsheet or within one of the quiz apps that allows for multiple correct answers (variance in spelling, numbers vs spelled out, grammatical differences, etc.)
There are several popular Trivia categories, and you can cater them to suit your team. If you have a highly specialized team, you can challenge them by bringing in field-related questions.
If your team come from all different background and are working on a project together, middle-school geography and science may be the most accessible for all. You can be strategic β if you have colleagues that range in age and background, mix them up. It will be fun and potentially beneficial for them to have a greater panel of knowledge within their team.
