team building ideas for women’s history month
This article will feature fun and engaging ideas to help you celebrate Women’s History Month at work, including speaker events, giving back opportunities, team building and more!
Women’s History Month is celebrated every March, and International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8th. WHM and IWD are opportunities to reflect on our impact as organizations and find out what we can do more to support women and girls in our companies, communities, and beyond.
To honor WHM and IWD, think about your team - what matters to them? Are they passionate about supporting the community? Do they need more opportunities for team building? Are they interested in learning and development? Whatever the answer is, it will guide you as you choose the right option for your team.
1. Amplify Women’s Voices
WHM is all about listening to women, but we don’t want to pressure women in our companies to be spokespeople. Seeking out experts, inspirational speakers, and trailblazers is a great way to support women and allow the women in your company to focus on enjoying the events.
Host a speaker event: Find ways to amplify women’s voices by inviting keynote speakers to your WHM event. You can choose women pertinent to your field or those who work in empowerment/women’s issues. This All-American Speaker list is full of inspiring women, including athletes, professors, activists, scientists, artists, and much more. You can also connect with women in your professional network, influencers, and virtual consultants who may be interested in a gig for your WHM event.
Social media highlights: You can tactfully shout out women in your company and highlight their contributions if they choose to participate. You can also share inspirational quotes from famous and influential women, ideally, one that is relevant to your company or industry. If your team participates in WHM events, you may share what you are reading, watching, and listening to with your audience, like a woman-led podcast or a fun, energizing playlist full of female artists.
2. Team Building Session
A Women’s History Month team building session is an easy and lighthearted way to bring your teams together for WHM and IWD. A little change-up in the work routine can boost morale for your teams and show them that allocating time for team building is a priority.
Mixology: Send your team a mixology kit to learn to shake, pour and stir to their heart's content. For the WHM element of the event, you can customize the drinks to be inspired by women or support women-founded liquor brands.
Tea Tasting: Invite your team to a tea-tasting experience with organic and fair-trade loose-leaf tea in honor of Women’s History Month. Choosing a brand like JusTea is a tangible way to support a farmer-direct organization working with women farmers in Kenya, paying them a fair wage and supporting their communities.
3. Game Session
Get creative and find ways to learn with your team while having fun for Women’s History Month. A virtual game session is a great way to celebrate trailblazing women and reenergize your teams simultaneously!
Team Trivia: Invite your team to a game of virtual trivia in honor of WHM, and find out who among you knows most about women’s history and trailblazers, including artists, women in STEM, athletes, celebrities, and more. You can offer some awesome prizes from women-owned businesses for the winner!
Music Bingo: Show your team a good time, and get ready to celebrate incredible female musicians in this energizing game of music bingo. Your team will bop along to awesome playlists full of the 80s and 90s throwbacks, 2000s pop hits, women empowerment songs, and songs by women currently dominating the charts. What a fun way to round off your WHM celebrations!
4. Charity Team Building Event
Getting involved and giving back to your community is a meaningful way to celebrate International Women’s Day. You can support causes and non-profits your team and company believe in and tangibly support your community.
Tech And Professional Advancements: Support an organization like Dress For Success, which works to empower women toward financial independence, or Girls Who Code empowers girls with the knowledge and skills to close the gender gap in engineering and tech.
Global Women’s Issues: Make a donation or become a corporate partner for The Malala Fund, which fights for girls’ education or host a fundraiser for Days For Girls, which provides menstrual health education and supplies for girls globally.
Give Back Locally: Connect with a local organization, like a women’s shelter, and find out how you can best support them. Speaking to a shelter directly will give you better insight into their much-need items like gift cards or hygiene items, volunteering opportunities like writing skills for their website or newsletter, or working on a hotline.
4. Support Women-Owned Businesses
One of the most tangible ways to support women on IWD is to partner and buy from women-owned businesses. You can send your team a gift box full of goodies from women-owned brands and small businesses!
Nguyen Coffee Supply: Nguyen Coffee Supply is a Vietnamese-American woman-owned and woman-operated company and roastery operating out of Brooklyn. They offer premium and sustainable coffee and supplies and provide economic advancement for local Vietnamese farmers.
Feed Your Soul: Feed Your Soul is a woman-owned and B-certified organization that offers premium desserts like cookies and brownies that are fresh and delicious. For every item purchased, a donation or a meal is donated to organizations like Feeding America and Coalition For The Homeless in NYC.
BeTini Spirits: BeTini Spirits is an award-winning ready-to-drink cocktail brand so that your team can enjoy a delicious drink without the extra prep work.
CAVO: CAVO is a Black-woman-owned candle company. Their candles are made with 100% premium soy wax, vegan and eco-friendly.
5. Host A Lunch And Learn
Invite your team to learn while connecting with the team by exploring a museum exhibit, reading together, or watching a movie or documentary. To elevate this experience, send them an e-gift card to enjoy lunch on you, or a snack box from a woman-owned business.
Museum Exhibits: Invite your team to learn about the role of women in American history through a fun exhibit. The National Museum of American History hosts a selection of virtual exhibits that showcase women in history, like The Suffragist exhibit on women’s journey and the fight to vote.
Virtual Exhibition: Google’s Breaking In: Women in STEM virtual exhibition explores the lack of representation of women in STEM and highlights incredible women such as Edith Clarke, the first professionally employed female electrical engineer in the US.
Watch Party: Media is a fun and accessible way for your team to engage with women’s history, so send out a poll with a selection of movies and documentaries showcasing women, and your team can vote on what they’d like to watch. Great options include Hidden Figures (2016) or Erin Brockovich (2000), or Little Women (2019).
